Why Earned Media Is Critical in the Age of AI

While SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is still important in the digital space, GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) has grown to be just as important

Something fundamental has shifted in how people access information and how brands get discovered, evaluated, and chosen. Seekers of information no longer start their research with a Google search. They open ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity, or let Google’s AI Overview provide an answer before they ever scroll to a single link. The companies that appear in those answers are being shortlisted. The ones that don’t appear in those answers are missing the big opportunity in GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), or optimized content that makes you much more likely to be found and cited in generated responses.

The question that every business leader should be asking: When AI answers a question about my company or industry, are we part of that answer?

The data tells us what determines who gets included, and it’s not your ad spend, your owned content, or your social media following. It’s earned media. At Alpha Advisory Group, a division of Alpha IR Group, we work with a wide range of clients to tell their business story with the likes of Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal, national broadcast, local media, and trade publications. Educating our clients on the value of earned media in the context of AI influences how they prioritize their external communications strategies.

The Research is Striking

Six independent studies conducted between 2024 and 2026 reached the same conclusion through different methodologies and different datasets: 82-89% of all AI citations come from earned media. Paid and advertorial content accounts for just 0.3%.1

Muck Rack’s ongoing Generative Pulse project, which has analyzed over one million AI citations across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, found that 84% of sources cited by AI come from non-paid sources. Journalism alone accounts for 27% of all citations, making it the single largest category.2

The pattern is consistent across every platform researchers have studied. Behold a few other important numbers:

  • AI referral traffic grew 527% year-over-year from 2024 to 2025
  • AI Overviews now appear in roughly 48% of all tracked queries, up from 30% a year ago
  • When an AI Overview appears, the click-through rate for the top organic result drops 54%
  • 93% of Google AI Mode searches end without anyone clicking anything at all

How AI Recognizes and Weighs Credible Content

Large language models are trained to identify high-value factual information. For example, credible news outlets make up half of the top ten sites in Google’s C4 training dataset. In OpenWebText, the dataset used to train early GPT models, nearly ten percent of all URLs came from just fifteen top publishers. Curated datasets overweight publisher content by a factor of five to 100 times compared to generic web crawls.

AI systems learned to value third-party credibility signals because their training data treated those signals as markers of quality. When they cite sources today, they apply the same credibility weighting. Your own website provides important first-party information about your company. Meanwhile, a story about you in a respected outlet provides independent, third-party validation, an increasingly important distinction as AI systems synthesize information from multiple sources.

The Case for an Ongoing Earned Media Strategy

Recency matters more than most companies realize. Half of all AI citations come from content published within the last eleven months. Citation rates are highest in the first seven days after publication and peak within the first thirty days. This means earned media, while a short-term visibility driver, must be continually fueled with new earned media placements as part of the longer-term strategy.

The Future Rules of Search are Evolving

The rules of search are being rewritten in real time according to a July 2026 report from the Wall Street Journal.3 Reddit, USA Today, Politico, the Economist, Reuters, and others are reassessing their relationships with Google as AI overviews drain organic traffic and erode publisher revenue through reduced website click-throughs. As one media consultant put it, “This is existential for some categories of publishers.” What this signals is that the ecosystem that makes Google the undisputed gateway to the open web is under strain. The strategies that drove search visibility just a few years ago may not hold tomorrow, which makes building credible earned media authority even more important.

Alpha Advisory Group has spent years building the kinds of media relationships and developing the right strategies that earn coverage in the outlets that matter. But today, the value of a trade, local, or national outlet story has compounded significantly in the AI era and now shapes whether your story reaches audiences before they ever visit your website or read a press release.

Companies evaluating their earned media strategy should consider how a more intentional approach to third-party coverage can strengthen their visibility and credibility, and Alpha Advisory Group can help develop a strategy built around those objectives.
